It is about now that we all start to think about Christmas and getting the Christmas decorations out of the loft!
For some, their decorations will already be up, but for others, now is the time to start planning where we are going to put the tree, what lights we are going to put up, both inside and out.
It is important to consider the following electrical safety tips when putting up your decorations, to ensure a worry-free and safe Christmas for you and your family:
- Switch off fairy lights and unplug them before you go to bed or leave the house.
- Check your Christmas tree lights conform to the British Standard (BS EN 60598).
- Don’t let bulbs touch anything that can burn easily, such as paper or fabrics.
- Use a residual current device (RCD) on outdoor electrical equipment - it instantly switches off the power if there is a fault.
- Don’t overload sockets – ensure only one plug per socket and turn off when not in use.
- In the event of fire get out, stay out and call 999.
- If you are installing lights outside, ensure that you use lights that are rated for outdoor use
- When setting up outdoor displays, ensure that the plugs are either plugged in on the inside of the house, or that you use an approved outdoor weather-proof socket.
- If a bulb blows, replace it as soon as possible
